Jewish Identities

Jewish identities and anti-Semitic politicians in the Austrian Parliament, 1861 to 1933, edited by Saskia Stachowitsch and Eva Kreisky.

This book is devoted to the participation of Jews in the development of Austrian parliamentarianism and their confrontation with antisemitism as a strategy of parliamentary politics. The many activities of Jewish parliamentarians in the two houses of the imperial parliament and in the National Council of the First Republic are brought to light through a collective biography and an analysis of parliamentary debates. The mutations of and resistance to antisemitism in Parliament are also investigated. The book makes a political-scientific contribution at the intersection of research into Jewry, antisemitism and parliamentarianism.

The contribution by our project team entitled “Inclusion and exclusion of Jews in the politics and rhetoric of the Austrian National Council after 1945: The early years of the Second Republic” surveys developments under the Second Republic.
